International arbitration

The International Arbitration Commission comprises lawyers practising in various jurisdictions who are engaged in international commercial arbitration and international investment arbitration.

The Commission’s focus is on the development of international arbitration law, and in particular on new trends in arbitration law and practice.
The Commission is also particularly attentive to the interaction of its subject matter with other areas of law, and works in co-operation with other commissions to this end.

The Commission’s work is directed by a Steering Committee, which comprises five members from different jurisdictions: Mr. Xavier Favre-Bulle, Chairman (Switzerland), Ms. Patricia Ann Peterson (Canada) and Mr. Peter Turner (United Kingdom), Vice-Presidents, Mr. Félix José Montero Muriel (Spain), Secretary, and Mr. Andrea Carlevaris (Italy), Web Director.

The International Arbitration Commission frequently organizes and participates in UIA seminars on international arbitration and related topics.

The Commission’s activities in 2008 included a seminar co-organised with Law Asia in Jaipur (India) on 9-19 February 2008 on the topic “Mediation and Arbitration in International Commercial Disputes”, and a seminar organised in Amsterdam on 23 May 2008 on the topic “Arbitration and the Courts”.

The Commission was also represented at the UIA-ACLA seminar held in Milan on 11-12 April 2008 on the topic “Legal Aspects of Doing Business with China”.

At the 2008 Bucharest Congress the Commission held a joint working session with the Mediation and Conflict Prevention Commission and with the Sports Law Commission on the topic “Arbitration and ADR to Resolve Sports Disputes”.
